Small Business SEO

by admin on April 19, 2011

This site has been dormant for a long time, I havent been concerned with helping others to market their sites (sorry ;-) instead I have concentrated on my own sites that earn money for me.

But, recently a lot of people have asked me about optimising their site and more general online marketing advice.

So as I take on more staff to operate my bread and butter businesses I have decided that the time is right to help and that this is the place to put that help for all to see.

So this first post in a long time is entitles Small Business SEO (or search engine optimisation)

SEO is straightforward (simple) but not easy.

There are few aspects to an SEO campaign.

They are

1. Target keywords where you can have an impact

2. Optimise your site and page

3. Get lots of backlinks, ideally tagged with your target keyword or variations thereof

4. More recently get social signals!

So which keywords to target?

The answer is the ones that you can achieve a good rank for and which are terms that buyers use. The way you find this out is with a tool called Market Samurai

Optimise your site: To do this target one keyword per page on your site and make sure it is included in your page title and in various places throughout the page, if you are using WordPress for your site (recommended) then use the Scribe plugin to make sure you have your keyword in all the right places.

Get lots of backlinks, this is a big subject but is the most important aspect of the whole process. We will talk about this in a future post, but for now make sure your links use your keyword and variations of it as the anchor text.

Social signals. Again a subject for another day, but do get a Facebook page for your business and have your site update it, then get people to like it.
